There are two types of automotive brake systems: drum brake and disc brakes. Both feature master cylinders, brake pistons, brake lines, and brake hoses. When you press the brake pedal, the pistons move along the core of the master brake cylinder and pressurize hydraulic brake fluid, which then runs through the lines and hoses. The difference between the two systems has to do with what parts the fluid affects once it's run through the lines and hoses.

The Different System Parts and How They Work

Drum brake systems have brake shoes that fasten to brake drums to produce the resistance needed to slow your wheels. A disc brake system uses brake calipers to clamp brake pads onto the brake rotors to generate that friction.

Eventually, though, your brakes will start to wear out due to the extreme heat and wear and tear involved in the braking process.

• The warning light on your dash comes on
• You notice grinding, squealing, or squeaking noises when you brake
